Louisiana Constitutional Carry

Louisiana Concealed Carry — 2025 Guide

Louisiana now allows constitutional carry, often referred to as Louisiana Constitutional Carry, no permit required for adults 18 and older. This 2025 guide breaks down Louisiana concealed carry laws, where you can and can’t carry, and why getting a permit still matters. Stay legal, stay safe, stay prepared.

Quick Take: Louisiana allows permitless (constitutional) concealed carry for eligible persons 18+. That freedom comes with rules — restricted places still apply, and training is essential.

1) Louisiana Constitutional Carry — What It Means

  • Permit not required to carry concealed if you’re 18+ and legal to possess a firearm.
  • You must follow all other state and federal laws. Freedom ≠ reckless.

Still illegal to carry here:

  • Schools and school property; courthouses and some secured government buildings; police stations.
  • Businesses that make most of their revenue from on‑premise alcohol sales (e.g., bars).
  • Private property with lawful “no firearms” posting or when the owner says no.
  • All federal property (post office, federal buildings, etc.).

2) Why a Permit Still Matters

Travel Reciprocity: Louisiana permits are honored in many other states, so you can carry legally while traveling where recognized.
Faster Purchases: Active permit holders may skip the NICS check with FFLs, reducing delays.
Training & Confidence: Classes teach safe handling, judgment, and legal essentials.
Professionalism: Shows responsibility if your actions are ever scrutinized after a defensive use.

3) Car Carry — Your Vehicle

  • Legal: You can carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle without a permit.
  • Secure it in a locked compartment or lockbox if you leave it unattended.
  • Parking protection: Firearms may be stored in locked private vehicles on many properties (see RS 32:292.1), with exceptions.
  • Stops: If pulled over, keep hands visible and communicate calmly that you’re a lawful carrier.

4) Safety — Live By These

  • Treat every gun like it’s loaded.
  • Never point at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
  • Finger off the trigger until sights are on target.
  • Know your target and what’s beyond.

Bonus: Use a holster that covers the trigger guard, practice your draw and re‑holster, clean your firearm, and train regularly with the gear you carry daily.

5) If You Ever Have to Use It

  1. Stop the threat; then stop shooting.
  2. Call 911 immediately and request medical help if needed.
  3. Keep your hands visible; don’t touch or reholster unless told.
  4. State: “I was attacked; I defended myself. I’ll cooperate after I speak with my attorney.”
  5. Call your attorney.
